Irresistible operetta directed by Steef de Jong and adapted by Paulien Cornelisse.
With 'Frau Luna', Opera Zuid presents an irresistible Berlin operetta by German composer Paul Lincke. Director Steef de Jong continuously demonstrates why this genre is alive and thriving. With this production, he makes his debut at Opera Zuid and brings the Dutch adaptation by Paulien Cornelisse to life in an imaginative and playful manner.
In this charming operetta, a group of young dreamers fall under the spell of the moon. They build an airship and set out in search of the 'man in the moon'. There they land in the wondrous world of Frau Luna, where freedom, love and imagination make the rules. Old conventions disappear, new desires flourish and nothing is what it seems. Or is the moon world ultimately nothing more than an imaginative reflection of earthly life?
Just as with his company Groots & Meeslepend, Steef de Jong once again opts for visible theatrical illusion: with cardboard, ropes and inventive theatrical ideas, the singers build a complete (moon)world. 'I enjoy creating a world that stands at odds with ours. Especially in a time when you get weary from all the misery, the need for lightness, brightness, joy, ascension - literally to the moon! The song Ist die Welt auch noch so schön touches on the heart of the operetta in that regard: the world will eventually perish, so you might as well dance and sing now!' Philzuid provides the energetic, timeless music, with swinging march rhythms and cabaret influences. Sung and spoken in Dutch, with English supertitles.
