Scapino Ballet Rotterdam
Visually rich production about the beauty and vulnerability of our oceans.
Following the successful production 'Anima Obscura', Nanine Linning creates with her international team once again a visually rich and emotionally charged multimedia performance. 'La Mer' is based on Claude Debussy's grand composition of the same name from 1905 and explores the beauty and vulnerability of our oceans. With twenty-five dancers, Linning contrasts the romantic imagination of the sea from Debussy's time with today's harsh reality; rising sea levels and pollution.

The result is a captivating hybrid of dance, music, couture and video art that invites reflection on our own actions. The cinematic music of Yannis Kyriakides – sound compositions he wrote for the phenomenal soprano Barbara Hannigan – offers a contemporary counterpart to Debussy's symphony. The digital scenography of media artist Heleen Blanken and more than eighty sustainable costumes by Japanese haute-couture designer Yuima Nakazato transform the stage into a mysterious world where beauty and menace go hand in hand.
