Romeo en Julia
Contemporary adaptation of a timeless classic.
Conflicts are flaring up all over the world. Borders are closing, walls are rising and people are being reduced to their origin or religion. From a growing need for hope and connection, Char Li Chung shows with his 'Romeo and Juliet' how relevant Shakespeare's world-famous classic still is today. Shakespeare did not write this story to reassure us, but to wake us up.
Young Romeo and Juliet find themselves on opposite sides of a cultural and religious fault line. For generations, their families have been locked in an all-consuming conflict. But from the moment they first see each other, passion ignites. Against all odds, they choose love. And in doing so, this couple holds up a mirror to us: not by asking which side you're on, but whether you're willing to let go of the role of enemy.
Last season, director Char Li Chung – known for works including 'The Banana Generation' – successfully tackled Puccini's classic 'Madame Butterfly'. For 'Romeo and Juliet', he collaborates once again with Vera Morina, in a contemporary adaptation that stays true to the language of Shakespeare's original.
