Director Nina Spijkers brings Chekhov's comedy 'The Seagull' to life in a new way
A family comes together in their vacation home. You witness their dreams and desires, but also their sorrow and jealousy. Director Nina Spijkers brings Chekhov's comedy 'The Seagull' to life in a new way. In it, a young, ambitious playwright presents her first play, her friend plays the lead role. Together they want to change the world with their production.
Her father and his girlfriend, herself a renowned actor and writer, push back. Is there room for a new voice or does the earlier generation keep the door closed? Like with the Shakespeare classics she directed, Spijkers opts for a gender swap of several key roles: "By having women play male roles and vice versa, a 130-year-old play feels like it was written yesterday. They remain Chekhov's words, but now with even stronger female roles and more openings for humor." You'll see among others Jaap Spijkers, Tamar van den Dop, Emma Buysse and Alex Hendrickx in a painfully recognizable clash between two generations.
