Mary Jane
A tender portrait about resilience, unconditional care, and human compassion.
Following the highly acclaimed productions 'A Case for the Existence of God' and 'Hamlet', director Erik Whien brings the celebrated play 'Mary Jane' to Dutch theaters for the first time. Kim van Kooten is responsible for the translation, and Charlie Chan Dagelet plays the lead role in this affectionate portrait about resilience, unconditional care, and compassion.
Mary Jane is a single mother caring for her chronically ill son Alex. Between beeping monitors, sleepless nights and hospital visits, she holds herself together with unwavering dedication. Gradually, she finds support from a group of women in her community. This creates a network around her in which everyone, from their own life conviction, background and motivation, cares for one another.
'Mary Jane' is the latest play by successful American playwright Amy Herzog. The semi-autobiographical story reflects her personal experiences with her daughter's illness. The premiere in New York was warmly received and the play was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Play 2024.
