De Erfenis
Tony Award-winning family drama seen in the Netherlands for the first time.
Inspired by 'Augustus: Oklahoma', their theatrical hit of 2024, Toneelgroep Maastricht brings the acclaimed family drama 'The Inheritance' to Dutch theaters. A stellar cast tells the tragicomic story of the dysfunctional American Lafayette family, struggling with hidden secrets, distorted memories, and unfulfilled desires.
Three adult children and their families gather at their deceased father's family estate. The house is being sold, the contents must be divided. While underlying tensions simmer and old feuds flare up, the children make a disturbing discovery among their father's possessions that will change their lives. To face the future, the Lafayettes will have to come to terms with ghosts from the past.
'The Inheritance' hilariously depicts the tragic downfall of a white, Western family through the eyes of one of the world's most celebrated contemporary black writers. With his muscular language, he creates brutal, violent and at the same time vulnerable characters. The production is directed by Michel Sluysmans, who works with his cast on a play that explores the question of how far children are responsible for the actions of their parents.
