The artist's diabolical dilemma in wartime.
When is resistance a necessity? Berlin, early nineteen-thirties. In a bustling city full of shows, theater and art, fascism rears its head. The ambitious actor Hendrik Höfgen is given the opportunity by the new regime to become a theater director. This presents him with a devilish dilemma: does he choose the quick path to success or does he remain loyal to his friends and ideals?
'Mefisto' is based on the eponymous book by Klaus Mann, which he wrote four years before World War II. His novel explores the question of when 'simply doing your job' becomes collaboration. Even today, we live in a time when democracy and hard-won rights face increasing pressure. Do you resist, even if you have to pay a price? Israeli writer Maya Arad Yasur, currently also an artist in wartime, creates the stage adaptation. This is the first time a work of hers is being shown in the Netherlands. With Sander Plukaard as Hendrik Höfgen.
